(This was made by a former member on another site. I thought it was pretty helpful and hopes she doesn't mind.)
Well, I've been noticing that there have been a question every now and then in the c-boxes of other rp sites for help in creating OCs, as well as complaints about people making Jounin-level Genins, god modding charries, blah blah blah blah blah. Well...I think a large, underlying source of all, aside from stubborness or laziness, this is...*drum roll*...that many people just don't know where to start when making their own characters so they just make sure that they're so perfect that nothing can go wrong. Well, hate to say it, but no one is perfect. Imperfect charries are more fun to play around with, so I give you this handy little guide.(Don't copy without permision) Shall we begin?
Name
Okay, this usually isn't that hard. You can even come up with some random name if you want. However, keep in mind that this is what your charrie will go by and how they're known in the RPing world, so you better like it. A good hint...give them a Japanese name. It's king of wierd for Joe Schmuck to be going around with Harukas, Tsunades, and all sorts of charries with Japanese name. Unless they have a distinctive, 'Yankee' personality, which doesn't really apply much in the Narutoverse, they should have a Japanese name. If you don't know what I mean by 'Yankee', just watch Fruits Basket. 'Nuff said. If you're stuck for a name, just use a mix of names that you like from manga that you've read, anime, etc. You can eved use FreeEdict if you want and type in words that you want their name to mean and get something out of that.
Height
It's rare for charries in the Naruverse to be six feet tall, save Kisame. Unless it somehow reflects a character trait of your charrie, you should keep it below six feet. If they're shy and easily intimidated, the shorter the better. If they're confident and charismatic, then the taller end is better. Doesn't really matter that much though, but it does give you a better mental image to work with though. Height isn't everything though. Just think of a few manga by CLAMP...Shido Hikaru is pretty short, but she's tough! I guess it's not that important of a detail, but that's just a hint if for some odd reason you have no clue how tall to make your charrie.
Gender
Well, it's up to you. Keep in mind though that a boy charrie isn't as likely to be as tender or emotional as a girl, and a girl isn't as likely to have a tough act unless she's had a rough history. 'Nuff said.
Appearance
Often of an underestimated importance, the appearance of your character is very important. It's how every other charrie initially sees your charrie, and first impressions are lasting. If their clothes are neat, prim, and proper, then they are neat and orderly, or perhaps they're meticulous about thier possesions. If they're a bit worn, then they're well-used and the wearer is quite active. If they're complete rags, then the charrie is assumed to be a pig that others will likely keep away from for a while. Shorts and shortsleeved are lively, active, as well as short hair. Leather jackets, studded straps, and boots along with spikesh hair for boys or striped hair for girls denotes a punkish charrie. If they have longer hair and more traditional or nicer clothing, then they appear more elegant and graceful. Even manga pros use some guidelines along these same lines. I would go on more, but that'll be covered in personality.
Personality
Okay, now we move on from the milk to the meat! Personality is the core of your charrie. A loner isn't going to be a leader or life of the party, and a hyperactive kid is very unlikely to understand others deep feelings to a good extent. As I stated in appearance, it helps if the two match up at least a little bit. Now we go on.
No human is perfect, and everyone has their own quirks that make them them and can be endearing or annoying as hell. Let's say, oh, we have a girl names Asame. She's a punkish kunoichi and has red stripes dyed in her dark hair, wears metal-plated gloves, and wears lots black accented with crimson. It would be quite unusual if she liked flowers and pink and cutesy, girly things. Now, I don't mean to stereotype at all, but this is about making your character believable. They're not always going to make the best decisions, and they can't look like they're from a boy band, have a million dollars, and have perfect jutsus. Who wants to hang around someone who's perfect? It's annoying. These are just a few tips, but I hope they help.
Village:
I don't know what to say about this...if they're villainous, than Oto...Loyal, then Konoha...if trained to stand on their own, Sand...I dunno...just wild guesses. Keep their geographical preferences in mind, but it would be quite humourous if your charrie can't stand the heat but lives in Suna.
Jutsus
Jutsus should line up with your charrie's age and rank. In other words. A-kun won't know an S-class jutsu at least until he's a Chuunin, and then only one at that, and will probably have very limited use of it. Genin have relatively easy jutsu, Chuunin middling, etc. In the name of all things good and sacred in this world, no Rasengan or Chidori! These belong only to the late Fourth, Jiraiya, and Naruto and Kakashi and Sasuke, respectively. Can I knock it through your skulls that they are very unique jutsu?! Chidori requires a Sharingan to use without leaving yourself completely and dangerously open to attacks, and Rasengan requires so much control that it took the Fourth three years to perfect it! It's only been handed down to Naruto, Jiraiya, and Kakahi! Please don't make me jump off a cliff! GGAAAAHHH! *end rant*
Kekkei Genkai
No Sharingans please, seeing as Itachi kind of, well, you know...killed them all! Be reasonable and keep in mind that not a single one is perfect. Also keep in mind that most quality RP sites you see will also deny custom Byakugans, not to diminish your fun, but to keep people from god-modding and such. 'Tis for your own good.
History
If you have missed everything else here, remember this: HISTORY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOU CHARACTER!!! IT REQUIRES MORE THAN ONE MEASLY PARAGRAPH! SHOW SOME DEDICATION AND BACKBONE PEOPLE!!! Whew, now that that's out of the way...^^;;
What makes a person into what they are? Now, I'm no philosopher or anything, but I believe it's their experiences and how they react to them. If they have an easy life, then your charrie probably won't be an exeptionally hard worker or intensely loyal because they're had no reason to become that way. There needs to be a tempering for growth. I'm a strong believer in tempering, because that's my life story...the more you're smashed in, the more impurities are driven out and the stronger and sharper you are. What happened to your charrie as a child and in adolescence? Where they hurt? If so, were they jaded? Were they happy? If so, did they extend their happiness to others? Was it in the face of harsh circumstances? History forms personality.
And that everybody, is what I have to say. I hope it's helpful to you.
